Fabulous broad beans

The last few weeks I have been busy trying out new recipes with my fabulous broad bean patch. My firm favourite is still smashed beans on toast, where you smash them in a mortar & pestle with parmesan, oilive oil, salt & pepper & then heap them on top of grilled sourdough rubbed with garlic. The crop is dwindling & the bush looks a bit mangy so not many more beans for this season which is sad, I love them & in particular I love the shelling process, I find it quite relaxing & this year I've had a very interested little helper in Chloe which makes it even more fun. We sit at the bench with a big bowl in front of us & just go for it, it doesn't seem like a chore that way at all.

Anyway last night I made the above salad which I didnt have high hopes for yet it turned out a treat. It is a recipe from Jamie Oliver's Jamie's Dinners - Moroccan Broad Bean salad with yoghurt & crunchy bits. It's basically beans double podded dressed with lemoin juice, olive oil, mint & salt & Pepper. These sit on a bed of yoghurt & are topped with fried red onion, cumin & breadcrumbs. Sounds a bit weird but the flavour combo was delicious. I served this along side some simple grilled chicken which I had marinated in olive oil, lemon juice & oregano. A fantastic meal for a warm pre-summers night.

Jamie Oliver - Cook with Jamie

What would Christmas be without at least one shiny new cookbook from Michael? This years gift was the new Jamie Oliver book. Flicking through it has useful info at the start of each chapter, for eg, How to shop & cook fish, detailed info on lots of different veg, cuts of lamb, beef & chicken (all complete with cute drawings!) & tips on sponges & cakes. The recipes as always look delicious & much in the same vein as recipes in his previous books, looking fwd to trying them out. Michael has even promised to cook a few for me as an added bonus gift, looking forward to that part for sure....
And as Matt has pointed out, as this is such a great book & I will only give you a taste for all of the wonderful recipes, you should go & buy a copy yourself, all proceeds go straight to the Fifteen Foundation which is a very worthy cause

This book was a huge impulse buy, I was walking one lunch time & went past the William Angliss kitchen shop & thought I would pop in & browse, of course I had no intention of buying yet another cook book! Anyway after seeing a couple of Ainsley's shows on the tele I thought he was quite amusing & his barbecues always had me craving & looked very inventive so I thought I better have this book, looking forward to trying out the recipes over Summer...

Australian Lifestyle Cookbook

My mum gave me this huge cookbook many years ago for my 21st birthday. The star recipe for me is the cheesecake which I've now made again after pulling this out of the cupboard & dusting it off. Will have to see what other treasures this book unearths. Flicking through you can see that it is a few years old, lots of old fashioned recipes such as fruit plans, prawn cocktails, trifles, Duck A L'orange, etc all layed out amongst beautiful photos of Australian scenery from country to outback to beach.

Nigella Lawson – How to be a Domestic Goddess – Baking and the art of comfort cooking

Well I seem to be acquiring Nigella’s books in reverse. When I first checked out Domestic Goddess I wasn’t so much into baking so didn’t bother. However lately I have to force my self to hold back & not overdo the sweets cooking as cant seem to get enough. So of course it was time for this book & have just been waiting for a bargain which I managed when Myers had a 35% off all books which teemed with a gift voucher meant I only had to spend $25.00 rather than the normal $55.00 – much better wouldn’t you say?

So as you can probably guess form above, this book is filled with baked goodies, I would say 90% of which are sweet & they all look mouth watering & drool worthy as you would expect. The chapters covered are Cakes, biscuits, pies, puddings, chocolate, children, Christmas, bread & yeast & The domestic Goddess’s larder, cant wait to get stuck in & show you my efforts.

The River Cafe Cook Book (Blue) - Rose Gray & Ruth Rogers

I picked up this book on ebay recently without having any idea what I would find in it. I have heard that The River Cafe books are fantastic especially if you want to do some good Italian cooking so thought I better add one to my collection. The food is described as 'uncomplicated food which is vibrant with flavour'. The recipes certainly look very appealing so looking forward to trying them out as always....
